Art Deparment
One of the main goals of the Art department at WCS is to recognize and develop the God given talent of creativity, and to use this gift to serve the school and community. Our Art department gives students the opportunity to learn about different techniques and media, develops their skills, and creates artwork for fundraisers, important events and the drama productions.
The Wellington Christian School Art department has been competing and winning awards in area art shows since 1997. Shows that our students have won recognition and prizes in include: The South Florida Fair, WESTFEST, Boynton Gala, ARTI-GRAS, Wellington Art Festival Youth Competition, Lighthouse Center for the Arts Community Student Exhibition, Wellington Art Society, and Wellington Christian Annual Spring Art Show. Choir is a place where we embrace music and use our musical gifts to glorify God. Our young singers are encouraged to work as a team and listen to each other in order to make all the parts come together in harmony. In the Choral Room we strive to learn about proper vocal and singing techniques. These include proper posture, breathing, warm ups and ear training, all of which lead to a higher level of singing and performance. We also learn about music theory and practice skills in order to read music more effectively and understand the language of music.
The choirs put on several performances a year. The 4th and 5th Grade Treble Choirs perform on occasions such as Thanksgiving, Grandparents Day, Open House, Christmas and in the final spring concert. The Secondary Choirs ("Free Spirit and "Glorious Harmony") perform twice in the fall and once in the spring in the Family Worship Center. They also, on occasion, perform in chapel on Fridays.
This year the Secondary Choirs took a wonderful trip to New York in April. The students got to see the Big Apple through a trip led by Joshua Expeditions. Not only did they have a fabulous cultural experience but they also experienced two live Broadway shows, “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and learned about important musical venues such as the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
Besides all the incredible events and performances listed above, we will be participating in adjudicated performances in the future as we encourage more students to participate in Choir. The Choir program is growing and it is an exciting time to be involved with new and up and coming musical talent.
The Band program at WCS includes 5th Grade Beginning Band, 6th Grade Band, Middle School Band (7th and 8th grades), High School Concert Band, and a High School Jazz Combo. All groups perform in the Christmas concert in December and the Spring Concert in May. The 5th Grade Band concentrates mostly on teaching the basics of each instrument and meets three times a week. All other groups meet every day during school, and involve some extra performances and events. Band students have the opportunity to participate in trips to the Kravis Center to see live performances, and middle and high school students perform for a variety of events, including school events (homecoming, pep rallies, talents shows), nursing homes, community events, and our school night at Barnes & Noble. High school students also have the opportunity to participate in the worship team for school chapels. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year, band students will have more opportunities to participate in festivals and competitions both locally and away.
Students in the band program at WCS are encouraged to use music as a means of glorifying God and are asked to strive for their best. They practice and work hard, but have fun in the process. They not only learn and perform music, but they also learn about the theory, composers, and history behind the music. Our band program is steadily growing and our hope for the future is that more students will find joy in playing music for our God.
